The Colony Theatre in Burbank Unveils First of Its Kind Summer Camp: New Colony Kids Programming Initiative

Colony Kids CREATEThe Colony Theatre in Burbank has unveiled its new groundbreaking summer camp, C.R.E.A.T.E., it was announced today. The highly innovative camp is part of a new Colony Kids Programming Initiative.

Colony Kids C.R.E.A.T.E. (Create. Really. Exciting. Art. Together. Everyday.) brings campers into the worlds of theatre and film. Over the course of six weeks (Monday–Friday, 8:30am–1:30pm), campers will experience what actually goes into staging a play and shooting a film in a safe and nurturing environment that empowers them to realize their personal and artistic potentials.

Colony Theatre Director of Development Heather Provost said, “We are committed to cultivating the artists of the future so this is a very important mission here at The Colony. We are excited to expose youth to all aspects of our industry. We are in the TV and Filmmaking capitol of the world, and combining the learning elements of theatre and film will be an unprecedented opportunity and experience for our Colony Kids.” Artistic Director Barbara Beckley added, “I love it when kids are in the building. Their curiosity is insatiable, and watching them discover their creativity is tremendously inspiring.”

C.R.E.A.T.E. will be the ultimate arts experience, from rehearsal to performance, from script development to filming. The kids will enjoy learning about playwriting, screenplay writing, acting, directing, production design, cinematography, editing, lighting, costumes, and sound from successful working industry professionals.

Campers will be broken into two groups – The Tony Group (theatre) and The Oscar Group (film). The Tony Group will focus on plays that students will write, direct, cast, and rehearse over the course of three weeks. Simultaneously, The Oscar Group will be following a similar template –but instead of theatre rehearsals, their projects will be filmed and edited with professionals by their sides.

At the end of the three weeks, the two groups will swap. The Tonys will become The Oscars and The Oscars will become The Tonys. The C.R.E.A.T.E. Camp will culminate in an exciting Theatre and Film Festival with a surprise celebrity host and red carpet festivities. Each project, whether a play or a film, will be presented in front of a live audience. The camp and festival will take place at The Colony Theatre June 19 – July 29.

The program is open to all skill levels and no previous experience is required. For more information and enrollment, go here: http://colonytheatre.org/shop2017/create.html.
