Byhalia, MississippiSixth Avenue has announced a one time only reading of Byhalia, Mississippi by Evan Linder on Tuesday, January 12 at 8pm at Akbar in Silver Lake. This reading is part of a national event called ‘A World Premiere Conversation’ — an event simultaneously connecting audiences attending the world premieres of Byhalia, Mississippi at theatres in seven North American cities. A digital conversation on Monday, January 18 will connect creative teams and audiences from all participating cities.

The play is making its world premiere simultaneously in Chicago (The New Colony and Definition Theatre Company), Memphis (Playhouse on the Square), Toronto (Cue6 Theatre), and Charleston (The Village Rep) on January 8, followed by readings in Boulder (Square Product Theatre), Birmingham (Theatre Downtown), and the Sixth Avenue reading in Los Angeles on January 12.

The Los Angeles cast will include (in alphabetical order) Frances Fisher, Charlotte Gulezian, Kristy Johnson, Zhalion Levingston, and Adam Silver.

Byhalia, Mississippi tells the story of Jim and Laurel Parker, a white Mississippi couple whose newborn black baby uncovers a secret affair and ignites racial turmoil in the town. The play is the 2015 winner of the NewWorks@The Works Playwriting Competition at Playhouse on the Square in Memphis and has been short-listed for numerous awards including the Theatre503 Playwriting Award.

I heart 99 - small logoSixth Avenue has announced “I♥99 The Musical!,” a one-night-only cabaret event to save Los Angeles intimate theatre. Produced by Adam Silver and directed by Daniel Henning, the curtain will go up on Tuesday, March 10 at 8:00 at Akbar in Silver Lake.

The cast will feature (in alphabetical order) Tisha Terrasini Banker, Burglars of Hamm, Parvesh Cheena, Deborah S. Craig, Drew Droege, Daisy Eagan, Tom Lenk, Constance Jewell Lopez, Amy Pietz, French Stewart, Jeffrey Todd, Kirsten Vangsness, and more to be announced. All performers are subject to availability.

Pro99 is a collection of thousands of individual theatrical artists that have become a community choosing to work in intimate theatres (under 99 seats) in Los Angeles. The community includes professional actors, directors, writers, designers, stage managers, and producers. Many are proud members of Actors Equity Association and most are members of other unions as well. Nicci ClaspellSixth Avenue’s Town Hall Back Room Reading Series continues with Joss Whedon’s Once More, With Feeling: The Buffy the Vampire Slayer Musical, directed by Tony Soto with musical direction by Dan Wessels, it was announced today by Sixth Avenue producer Adam Silver. The musical episode will be read one night only, Tuesday, November 11 at 8:00 at Akbar in Silver Lake.

Along with a live rock band, the cast will feature Nicci Claspell as Buffy along with (in alphabetical order) Tom DeTrinis, Jay Donnell, Geoffrey Going, Ashley Joyce, Natalie Lander, James Lynch, Kimberly Moore, Reagan Osborne, and Cailan Rose. In Once More, With Feeling, the classic episode from Season Six of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a mysterious force compels the Sunnydale residents to burst into musical numbers revealing their innermost secrets and desires.

Town Hall is Sixth Avenue’s monthly play reading series taking place on the second Tuesday of every month at Akbar. On December 9, Sixth Avenue will read Love in the Time of Chanukah by Joshua Harmon (Bad Jews) directed by Luke Kanter. A slate of events for 2015 will be announced shortly.
